Watch Films, Not Movies

Hollywood Clichés Make for Sweet Infographics

To promote the New York International Latino Film Festival, agency Wing New York has created a clever series of charts and graphics that illustrate Hollywood movie clichés, the underlying assumption being that the festival’s lineup is above them. Film festivals have their own tropes, of course, but the graphics Wing came up with are pretty clever. Even the obvious jokes (bad guys can’t shoot straight!) are saved by their playfully minimalist visuals. If I had to pick a favorite, I’d go with “Must-Have Lines in Movies,” because I’m pretty sure the first Lethal Weapon contained all of them. Check out that one and several more after the jump. Hat tip to Ads of the World and Mental Floss.

MOVE, EAT, LEARN

MOVE from Rick Mereki on Vimeo.

3 guys, 44 days, 11 countries, 18 flights, 38 thousand miles, an exploding volcano, 2 cameras and almost a terabyte of footage… all to turn 3 ambitious linear concepts based on movement, learning and food ….into 3 beautiful and hopefully compelling short films…..

= a trip of a lifetime.

It’s actually a shame that the script for Gulp, touted excitedly as “The World’s Largest Stop Motion Animation” is a bit lame, because the tale of the film’s creation is quite magical. Shot on a Nokia N8 camera (well, three of them, actually) this video tells that story, with lovely moments from Merlin, more usually creative director on Aardman’s Wallace and Gromit films, and Jamie Wardley, the film’s charmingly eccentric “principal sand artist.”

(Full story at Fast Company.)

This would have been fun to work on.

No Budget Indie Film Has Grossed $200K in iTunes Sales

Here’s a story that everyone will love, except Hollywood. An Indie film, made with absolutely no money and a DSLR camera, has grossed over $200,000 and climbed into iTunes Top 100 Movies.

The movie, For Lovers Only, is a romance flick produced by brothers Mark and Michael Polish. The pair used a Canon 5D and existing computer equipment to record and edit the film. The movie took 12 days to shoot and starred Mark Polish as the male lead playing opposite actress, Stana Katic.

Not a single dime was spent on filming or producing the movie. The brothers’ only expense was hotels, food and taxis which they would have incurred had they been on vacation instead of shooting a film.

The movie climbed as high as #43 in iTunes Top 100 Movie chart and has grossed over $200,000 in profits. There was no expensive marketing budget, either. Most sales were generated by word of mouth or circulation on social networks. [The Wrap via PetaPixel]
